Secular holiday : Abolition of Slavery Day in French Overseas Territories: May 27 in Guadeloupe, May 22 in Martinique, June 10 in Guiana, Dec. 20 in Réunion Island, April 27 in Mayotte, May 23 in Metropolitan France (where it is not a public holiday)
In fact, the second abolition decree was signed in Paris by Victor Schoelcher on April 27, 1848.
The first decree had been signed in Paris by the French Revolution on Feb. 4, 1794, but had been cancelled by Napoleon on May 20, 1802.
