Mothers' Day -
Sunday March 11, 2018

cards/flowers : Mother’s day has evolved in many countries in different ways. This is because mother’s day has different origins in different countries and therefore occurs on different days in the year. One school of thought claims that this day emerged from the custom of mother worship in ancient Greece. Mother worship which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of gods, and Rhea, the wife of Cronus, was held on March 15 to March 18 around Asia Minor. They insist that this custom spread around the world. Mothering Sunday is the celebration of motherhood in the United Kingdom. It is also known as Mid-lent Sunday, Rose Sunday and Laetare Sunday. It originally comes from the Victorian practice of allowing servants to return home to visit their mothers on this day. In the United States, Julia Ward Howe (May 27, 1819 - October 17, 1910) was a prominent American abolitionist, social activist, and poet. Howe’s Battle Hymn of the Republic was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1862 and quickly became one of the most popular songs for the Union during the American Civil War. After the war she focused her activities on the causes of Pacifism and women’s suffrage. In 1870 she was the first to proclaim Mother’s Day, with her Mother’s Day Proclamation.

Start of Ramadan (may be changed to the nearest day) -
Wednesday May 16, 2018

cards/flowers : Originally Ramadama is the name of the ninth month in the Arab world. It is, above all, a month of fasting. Fasting was not born with Islam. The abstaining from eating and drinking is mentioned in the Old and New Testaments, preceding the prophet Muhammad. Thus, in the Bible, it is mentioned that Queen Esther asked the Jews to fast for three days before asking her husband to spare the Jews. According to the New Testament, Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert. Referring to this episode, Christianity has a fasting period of 40 days called Lent . Today, the fasting period of practicing Catholics lasts from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday. The start of Ramadan generally depends on local observation of the moon crescent, but others choose the calculation of the new moon or the statement of Saudi Arabia to determine the start of the fasting period. The three main prohibitions of Ramadan are: eat, drink and have sex, It is possible to swallow one's own saliva, but not the water with which mouth was rinsed. Practitioners can go swimming or take a shower, as long as they do not swallow water. Alcohol-based perfume is prohibited. Nail biting is allowed as long as nails are clean. Dates fruit are recommended after breaking of the fast, provided they do not come from Israel. Travelers, pregnant or nursing or menstruating women are allowed to stop fasting. Practitioners usually gain weight during this period. Punishments are particularly heavy year Algeria, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

cards/flowers : The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days. Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that perhaps you may be thankful NOT a public holiday [Wikipedia]

Tuen Ng Festival (Dragon Boats) -
Monday June 18, 2018

cards/flowers : The festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar, the source of its alternative name, the Double Fifth Festival. The focus of most celebrations involves eating zongzi (sticky rice treats wrapped in bamboo leaves), drinking realgar wine (雄黃酒, xiónghuángjiǔ), and racing dragon boats. The story best known in modern China holds that the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty. Chinese Valentine's day -
Friday August 17, 2018

cards/flowers : It was said that the Goddess of Heaven, out of pity, decided to let them unite once on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month as she was touched by their love for each other. In some versions it is the Emperor of Heaven, the cowherd's father, or the cowherd's mother who has the role of separating the lovers for them to focus on their work instead of romance. The star Deneb is a fairy who acts as a chaperone when the lovers meet on the magpie bridge. Rather than once a year, there is a version where the lovers were permitted to reunite once a month. There is a belief that sometime during the night of Qixi, the two stars Altair and Vega will actually unite on the same side of the Milky Way. Similar stories are told throughout Asia: in Japan, Korea, Thailand, Laos and Indonesia. In South-east Asia the stories were known as Sudhana Jataka, believed to be one of the stories of the past lives of the Buddha, or the jataka [Wikipedia]
